Fixing the relationship between ourselves and our planet needs a world of storytellers, innovators, advocates and changemakers. But right now they don’t have the tools they need to unleash change on a global scale.

We want to change that and by doing so energise and scale up communications around the causes of and solutions to the planetary emergency.

Over the next 10 years the world’s top documentary filmmakers and data scientists will record our world as it changes and responds to the climate and nature crisis. We will film the wonder, the impacts and the solutions. We will pair these images with data visualizations and scientific references on an open source platform where anyone can easily find what they need to create trusted, high quality visual content to change their world.

We have created a new registered Community Interest Company and are looking for a visionary Executive Director to lead it.

Open Planet has been established by documentary producers Silverback (www.silverbackfilms.tv) and the data scientists behind EarthTime (http://earthtime.org). It has founding partnerships with University of Exeter and WWF to help guide our focus to deliver the maximum impact and accuracy.

Role and Skillset

We are seeking an exceptional individual with a strong belief in the value of partnership and the principle of equal access to the information and assets that can help tackle the planetary crisis.

Central to Open Planet’s success is how the assets we create are used to maximum impact. Our ambition is not to build a massive organisation but instead to create the most powerful partnerships.

Working with NGO’s, educators, media companies, broadcasters and multilateral organisations our Executive Director (with the support of their small team and passionate, well connected Board) will create and develop the partnerships to enable Open Planet content reach millions of changemakers around the world.

The successful candidate will be someone with a proven track record of building and running complex multifaceted campaigns and partnerships. They will be well connected and excellent at working with senior stakeholders, funders and experts.

The Executive Director works closely with team leads from EarthTime and Studio Silverback to ensure smooth delivery of contracts for projects that contribute to both impact and income of the Open Planet.

The Executive Director will also work with Open Planet’s expert advisory group and commercial clip sales partner (ALL3 Media) to both guide their focus and implement their advise into Open Planet’s wider strategy.

2. Building partnerships

Open Planet’s mission can only be achieved through partnerships. These will range from collaborations with universities and NGO’s, to outreach partnerships such as exhibits and events and the commercial partnerships that bring both reach and income.

The Executive Director will be both a spokesperson and a partnerships broker. A natural collaborator yet able to be clearsighted in prioritizing Open Planet’s time and resources for maximum impact.

3. Financial planning and fundraising

Responsible for overseeing Open Planet’s budget, the Executive Director manages budget line items, approving expenses and raising funds for impact projects aligned with Open Planet’s mission. Fundraising includes developing proposals in consultation with the team. In the inception phase, the Executive Director submits a budget estimate which is refined as operations commence, with input and insight from team members and the Board.

Working Environment

This role reports to the Chair and Board of Open Planet. However we are not looking to create bureaucracy and process. The Executive Director will be well supported by teams at

Silverback and EarthTime as well as an expert advisory group but will also be empowered to genuinely lead and develop Open Planet.
